Home Bay, with the regenerating forest on its doorstep, is a wonderful spot in summer to camp at the DoC campground. You are so close to Auckland yet it feels like a world away!
If conservation volunteering is your thing, our Summer Weeding Camps give you the chance to stay on Motutapu, enjoy this magic place AND give something back to the restoration of the forest.
Stay at the Home Bay campground, do some vital weeding for about 4 hours a day (or more if you want!) and then listen to the birds, swim and relax!
We have a range of options for weeding and can change our plans to suit the group's fitness and age. It might also be hot so we can split the weeding times during the day to avoid the hottest periods. Although we want to get lots of good work done, we also want you to enjoy your stay on the island.
This is a great opportunity to give something back by helping to weed the forest, promoting its growth as a habitat for native birds and other creatures.
Bring your tent, your food and enthusiasm, and we will provide:
- Transport to/from Rangitoto wharf
- Use of cooking and bathroom facilities at the lovely Reid Homestead
- No camping fees
- Beautiful setting on the beach front
- Any training and equipment required
- Opportunities to explore Motutapu
- Plenty of bird life - including kiwi if you are lucky
Dates for Weeding Camps:
- 27-30 December
- 24-26 January (Anniversary Weekend)
- 6-8 February (Waitangi Weekend)
