It's been a busy winter for the team on Motutapu:
Nursery: After a bumper seed collection season, our nursery team is busy propagating and growing on seedlings for 2026 and beyond.
Planting: The Central Pond area has been a key focus for this year, improving the habitat around the pond for bird life. Hear more about this area from Nathalie, our Chair. We have also been trialling techniques for planting into kikuyu in preparation for more of this in 2026.
Weeding: Our volunteer weeders are relentless. Every week, they remove pest plants such as moth plant, apple of sodom, wattle and woolly nightshade to allow the growing forest to flourish.
Our new tool bags from Hastings based BagEm will be invaluable as the weed team gears up for the difficult moth plant flowering season over summer. Kia Kaha Weed Team!
Maintenance: Our handy maintenance team continues to keep everything running smoothly - from sharpening tools to upgrading the irrigation system.
We have volunteer opportunities that suit all experience levels including beginners. Come and join us in making a difference!
Funder support: We are very grateful to Trees That Count for funding planting for our 2025 planting season.
We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Auckland Council who provide funding for weed control contractors and towards employing our Operations Manager, Gaynor, who does a fantastic job of orchestrating all these different activities!
