100% Dog free at all times
With Motutapu and Rangitoto currently being cleared of predators like stoats and rats we now have an opportunity to become sanctuaries for the recovery of precious species such as kiwi and takahe. Of course, this can only happen when the islands are 100% dog-free at all times.
- Uncontrolled dogs have been known to kill flightless birds like kiwi, weka and penguin.
- Ground-nesting shore birds such as the New Zealand dotterel and fairy tern, found throughout the
Auckland region, including Motutapu, may desert their nests if they are disturbed by dogs, leaving their eggs to overheat and die in the sun.
- Native species are legally protected from dog attack or disturbance wherever they are found, even
if they are not in a controlled dog area.
No Dogs Allowed ('Controlled' Areas) In general dogs are not permitted on land managed by DOC, especially the island reserves of the Hauraki Gulf including their foreshore areas. Within the Auckland region, islands managed by DOC where dogs may not go include: Mokohinau (including Burgess Is), Rakitu (Arid Is), Hauturu (Little Barrier Is), Goat Is, parts of Kawau, Beehive, Moturekareka, Motutara, Kohatutara , Saddle, Motuora, Tiritiri Matangi, Rangitoto, Motutapu, Motuihe, Motukorea (Browns Is).
Exceptions are in place for police dogs, dogs used in DOC management and guide or companion dogs (certified as helpers of people with disabilities).
