1080 just wasn't the right tool on Rangitoto and Motutapu islands however it continues to be a good conservation tool elsewhere. There is plenty of science available on the use of 1080 in New Zealand, which is widely available on the internet - and from both DOC and the Animal Health Board. It pays to find out as much as possible on the issue, as there is a lot of misinformation about 1080. The bottom line is that DOC would not continue to use any toxin that would have highly detrimental effects on our native wildlife - it would defeat the purpose of our job! The benefits to wildlife of getting rid of pests are proven. A good example is that in Tongariro Forest Park, with no pest control only one out of ten kiwi chicks will survive. After an aerial 1080 drop, this survival rate rose to 7 out of 10 kiwi chicks making it to a year old. In the same area, blue duck chicks and fantail chicks survival rates also rose. |
