STOP, CHECK, GO...and have fun on our treasured islands this summer!
A series of island based concerts is set to raise awareness around our marine reserves and sanctuaries this summer. Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands and Motutapu in the Hauraki Gulf will host a total of seven 'concerts for conservation'.
Both islands are now pest free due to major eradication programmes. Organisers of Live at the Islands are working closely with the Department of Conservation to ensure the message gets out to all visitors to take special care, as the islands provide a safe haven for many of our rarest and most endangered wildlife and plants.
"These concerts are a great way for us to inform the public about taking some simple precautions when visiting these protected locations" explains event organiser Jackie Sanders. "We need to leave pests and pets at home and check for stowaways such as rats, mice and ants in our bags or on our boats. Clean off any soil and weeds too from footwear"
"Remember just 3 simple rules. Before leaving the mainland stop and check your gear for any unwanted hitch-hikers," continues Ms Sanders, "then go, have fun and enjoy some great music in an idyllic setting."
Live at the Islands presents some interesting logistical challenges. Every single piece of equipment such as staging, marquees and sound systems, as well as every vehicle, tool, even the ice-creams must undergo bio-security checks before being barged over. "It's a daunting undertaking but it will be worth it!" adds Ms Sanders.
Live at the Islands support local conservation projects Project Kiwi Care and Project Island Song in the Bay of Islands and The Motutapu Restoration Trust in Auckland. A portion of each ticket sold is donated to the programmes to assist with restoration work and species re-introduction. Full details of line ups, timings, transport options and bio-security information can be found at www.arkpresents.co.nz

one amazing kiwi summer experience....
The spectacular Urupukapuka Island, Bay of Islands and Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf are the settings this summer for a series of seven concerts for conservation.
The stellar line up includes this years Best Solo Female Artist Tui winner Anika Moa, Nathan Haines and the Dream Band, Minuit, the Jordan Luck Band, Autozamm, Don McGlashan, Kirsten Morrell, The Topp Twins, Wellington International Ukelele Orchestra and many more.
ARK concerts support local conservation projects and at Urupukpuka we are supporting Project Kiwi Care a major contributor to Bay of Islands conservation initiatives including Project Island Song. This is a major ecological restoration programme. They plant trees and release rare and endangered birds back onto the islands, helping restore the Bay of Islands to its former natural glory.
The Motutapu Restoration Trust is the project we want to shout about at the Motutapu gig. Teams of passionate volunteers are ensuring that this jewel in the Hauraki Gulf becomes New Zealand's largest island sanctuary We think what they have been doing is pretty special, so we are proud to be supporting them via the Live at the Islands events.
Both islands are now pest free, so we ask that you show your support for the conservation efforts, not only by attending the concerts, but by adhering to the Leave No Trace philosophy. Don't litter, use the recycle bins provided and respect the environment we are lucky enough to be having fun in!
Concert-goers should head to the concerts early and enjoy the beautiful beaches, historic and archaeological walks, swimming, snorkelling and kayaking, before grabbing refreshments at one of the fully licensed bars. Then kick back and enjoy the sounds of some of New Zealands finest musicians til sunset.
Those with more energy can party into the night with the ZM Afterparty on the Beach. Full details of line ups, timings and transport options can be found at www.arkpresents.co.nz
