When visiting the island you may be lucky enough to catch a screening at the Reid Homestead of the DVD

'The Guns of Motutapu'

 the guns dvd

The DVD, produced and directed by former Trustee and military history enthusiast, Chris Keenan (www.4dcanvas.com) promotes heritage conservation on the island and uses some of the most up to date computer technology currently available.

Chris spent literally hundreds of hours recreating the gun battery in 3D Virtual Reality on his computers at Devonport.

The DVD portrays the very rich geological, Maori and Colonial history as well as telling the stories of the men and women who served on Motutapu, operating the gun battery to help protect Auckland in the event of an attack by sea during WWII.

Former Prime Minister, Helen Clarke, launched the DVD at a special function at the Auckland War Memorial Museum on the eve of Anzac Day, April 2006.

The Guns of Motutapu project represented the largest 3D modelling project of its kind within the Southern Hemispere's heritage community. The film includes a short history of the island spanning the last 1000 years and was the most demanding work yet produced by 4D Canvas.

The DVD is promotional only and is not for commercial sale

The Motutapu Restoration Trust has a vision of safeguarding the island's unique heritage, planning for future education and recreation opportunities, improving public access, maintaining a farming experience close to the city and rebirthing the island's forest ecosystem
