"Breathing new life into an ancient landform"
Our vision is to restore the natural and cultural landscapes of Motutapu.
- The natural landscape similar to that which existed on Motutapu after the Rangitoto eruption around 600 years ago.
- The cultural landscape handed down by Maori, early settlers, farming and the military.
We aim to:
- Restore native ecosystems
- Replant several hundred hectares in native forest
- Collect and propagate seeds from indigenous plant stock
- Protect the growing volunteer forest from plant pests
- See the removal of the seven remaining animal pests
- Re-introduce threatened species of plants, birds, reptiles and invertebrates
- Provide opportunities for volunteers to experience hands on conservation
- Encourage links with the wider Auckland community
- Protect and maintain the WWII gun emplacements
- Restore appropriate military sites
- Develop the restored Reid Homestead as a volunteer base and a visitor centre
- Re-establish Maori links with Motutapu through cultural activities
- Protect and interpret the archaeological sites on the island
- Facilitate life-long learning for all ages
